Get Serious and Start Making Money from your Online Business

To get online business working and generating revenue for you, you need to do it seriously. That means you must set a goal, an expectation for it; how much money do you want to earn and how much money you will spend; what will you be doing after 1 month, 2 months or 3 months and other stuff. Treat making money online as a real business does mean that you will need to stop signing in Facebook, Tweetdeck and other distraction stuff and focus all of your effort into one thing, your business.

I have made myself these tips and I think they would be useful to you. You could even share your own tips about how to treat making money as a real business in the comment section below this post.

Set a specific goal

When I started out, I did not have any goal in my mind; no expectation of how I wanted myself to be or how much money I would need to earn. Then, I reached out to the blogosphere where other bloggers teach me how important of having a goal is. You need to have a goal so that you will have an encouragement, a desire to achieve what you are dreaming.

A good goal needs to be:

  • Time bounded. Your goal should be wrapped around some specific time, maybe one week, one month or even one year. For example, I want my traffic to increase to 1000 daily visitors next month. That goal is a good example because now you have a time constraint. By setting up a time constraint, you’re forcing your mind be more active in finding the way to achieve the goal.
  • Realistic. Your goal should also be realistic. You can’t set a goal to earn $10,000 a month if you currently don’t have anything which generates that much money yet.
  • Measurable. Is your goal measurable? In other words, can you measure your success?  A good goal always comes with a good metrics to measure your goal. For example, if you set a goal to achieve 1000 visitors next month, you can measure it through Google Analytics. However, if you set a goal of having 1000 visitors in age 18-50 years old, it will not be a good goal because you can’t track their age.

3 steps to set a goal

  1. Determine what you really need/want. Make a list of the goals and assign priority number to it. Therefore, when you sort out the goals, the most crucial goal will be on the top and the least important goal will be on the bottom. For example, when I started out, my goal was simply to attract 50 visitors a day.
  2. See your goal. Now you will need to fit your goal in your current settings. Does your goal have necessary characteristics of a good goal? If your goal doesn’t have a characteristic, make or add one.
  3. Achieve your goal. For each goal, write down the tasks you think you should do to achieve the goal. Make a plan that contain tasks you need to do to achieve your goals and stick to it daily. Measure your goals as you do the task to see whether you meet the time constraint of the goal or not.

Set up a schedule

Schedule is a great tool to organize your work. Personally, I have been using Google Calendar to plan upcoming tasks that I should do to achieve my goals as well as other occasions.

By utilizing schedule, you can:

  • Sort out the tasks that you need to work in the upcoming days. Remember what we are talking about when we set up goal? You need to break down goal into many number tasks and do those tasks daily. The reason why you should use a schedule to plan tasks is because there are some tasks that require specific time to do it. For example, in my calendar, I often schedule writing new article in the morning because that time works best for me. How’s about you? :)
  • Plan when you should start working and when you should take a break. If we treat making money as a hobby, we will allow ourselves open Facebook, Twitter, etc while we are working just to “check” some friends’ status and that “check” often takes hours. Using calendar requires you to actually focus on one thing, do it continuously then take a break.
  • Plan for expected things and unexpected things will pop up when you are working so you will get least distractions.

Set up another Paypal account

You should set up two Paypal accounts for yourself. One account would be used for your personal purchases and one account should be used for any purchases related to your business.

The advantages?

  • Easy to track expenses. If you keep using one account, you can’t track how much you have spent for your business and whether you’re making a good profit from it. Having two accounts easily solve this problem.
  • No limits. When you upgrade your Paypal account to Business or Premium account, you don’t have any withdraw limit and that means you’re free to deal business.

According to Paypal policy

Can I have multiple PayPal accounts?

Yes. You can have one Personal account and one Premier or Business account. You can add more email addresses, debit or credit cards, and bank accounts to your account, but each account must have its own email address and financial information. You can also upgrade your Personal account to a Premier or Business account.

Document your business at one place

I know this may sounds redundant, something you probably says “Oh, please don’t tell me about organize things. I am organized person” but trust me, this tip has helped me a lot in making money recently.

What I do is that I create another drive in my computer for my own work only. I also set up a back up service for that drive so now, my business is 100% protected, both online and offline. If one drive fails, I still have my own work drive safe. If both fail? I have my back up online service ready to restore what I have left off in my computer.

(PS: I use Mozy as my online back up service. It’s really good so far. Give it a try for yourself. They have free plan which I think is suitable for most of us)

Then, on my desk, I document every papers into one folder and store it at one place. Therefore, every time I sit at my desk, my files are always ready for me to work with.

Strict work attitude

The last tip I want to share with you is be strict with yourself.

My parents were disappointed at me when I scored very low in my high school and that was a shock to me. I used to be a easy-let-go person simply because I did not have any specific goals or encouragement in my life.

Several things happened and I changed. Every time I sit on a table, I tell myself I must make something done today. I don’t allow myself get distract while I was working. I don’t allow myself to give up when I fail at something. I also set up some small punishment for myself so that I can get used to the routine everyday.

All I want to say is you need to set yourself some professional attitude. This will help a lot when you step into managing your own online business as well as when you are employed by someone else. Being professional and you will get more respect for what you are doing and be a successful online entrepreneur.

I hope you find my tips are helpful and if you want to contribute more tips that has helped you treat making money online as a real business, don’t forget to share with us in the comment below :)
